The French Girl's Lair was a great place for a short visit to Port Renfrew. Everything was as advertised, cozy and efficient. The instructions were detailed and everything we needed was close at hand. The power was out when we arrived but there were plenty of flashlights and the propane fireplace started right up using a backup battery. We were able to use the propane stove and the BBQ to look after our cooking needs. The Renfrew Pub is great!
This cabin was SO perfect! Spent hours on the beautiful deck after fishing! The fire pit and wood supplied was second to none! Extremely comfortable master bedroom! Lots of space in the kitchen,/seating area. Large fridge and great coffee maker! We will definitely be back! Many thanks for the incredible memories made!
Number 17. Was perfect for us. There were two of us and one small dog. The instructions we received prior to travel were spot on and detailed. Finding the accommodation was easy, and as described. We noted many thoughtful touches in the cabin, such as the propane appliances and everything supplied in case of power outage. The bed was very comfortable, and the area was very quiet. We didn’t stay long enough to enjoy the outside deck, But will definitely do so in the future. The cabin is walking distance to the pub restaurant, and the Café next door.
thanks so much for the review
We had a wonderful, relaxing couple of days. The weather was good, the cabin is very cozy with a comfortable bed and well equipped and organized. We enjoyed the private deck with fire pit and BBQ. Close to hiking trails, beaches and the Ocean. We can’t wait to go back in the near future!
Thanks so much for your review! So happy you had a great time.
This cabin is beautifully furnished to make it a cozy retreat from the busy lives we live. Complete with propane appliances to make sure even if the power goes out you’re covered.
A patio equipped with a propane heater if needed and a perfect set up with a fire pit.
We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this cabin to everyone looking to getaway in renfrew!!
We had a wonderful weekend - the cabin was very cozy and extremely well stocked and the outside fire pit was nothing short of amazing. We spent both evenings parked in front of a blazing fire, wrapped in blankets and sipping hot toddy's. I cant wait for our return visit in a few months. A truly lovely place :)
Loved this one. Ive stayed in four of dans cabins now and this was my favorite
The cabin was really well-situated in a quiet 'village' of similar cabins, ideal for hitting all the local beaches and trails, and a quick walk to the pub and café (highly recommended). The kitchen was really well-stocked (so often not the case in rental cabins like this) so preparing meals was quite enjoyable. No view, though, so #17 is more of a base of operations than a place to hang out.
Sadly, the bed was more like a hammock – really needs a new, more supportive mattress – my girlfriend and I both found it very uncomfortable and had sore backs by the second morning.
Thanks Matt for your comment, we appreciate your feedback... I must say you are the very first guest commenting about the bed. We frequently see comments telling us how comfortable the bed is, and we sleep on it regularly, and find it very comfortable. Perhaps you are use to a more hard mattress.
Frist of all, we would like to Thank you, Hi Dan, you got a very nice helpful staff. THANK YOU. Because OF OUR SUDDEN PLANNING and ONLY stay one night , we couldn't find a place even a camp site at that time, However, after your lady answered me that she can find a cabin for me even one night. That's a amazing. Last but not least, cabin is well stocked and clean, LOVE IT. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Before we arrived I got a phone call to give me instruction. Then an email with door code and phone numbers in case.
I felt well taken care of. No stress. Just shoe up and do what we wanted.
The place had it all.
Thanks for a great experiNce

Must Know
As of June 01, 2020 and due to the health and safety concerns brought on by the corona event, please be aware of these changes we have made to our cottages:
SUNDRY ITEMS: All condiments and staples have been removed from the cottage. This means sundry items like coffee, tea, sugar, salt and pepper (and their shakers), cooking oils and other handy things that help round-off a nice meal have had to be removed. Be sure to include these kinds of items in your list of things to bring to the cottage. Most of these are available at the San Juan Market (in Port Renfrew), but we never know if the supply will keep up with the demand under the new rules. And please, take home with you all the condiments you brought;
LINENS: Of course, ALL bed linens, duvet covers, bath and hand towels, shower curtains and kitchen towels and dish rags are professionally laundered between each Guest’s visit. But we have had to remove all the extra blankets that each cottage had earlier provided. Please pack your own favourite blankets from home to increase the cozy factor during your stay at Handsome Dan’s;
DISHES Although the cottage remains fully equipped with all serving dishes and plates, glasses, cups, cooking pots and pans and utensils you will need to prepare a fine meal, REMEMBER that these items will all have been used, cleaned and stored away in their respective location by the previous Guest. With this mind, be sure to re-clean each re-useable piece of kitchen equipment before your personal use (there is plenty of dish soap and clean dish rags in the cottage)
GUEST INFORMATION BOOK: All the information for the cottage, including where things are, and how things work are in the welcome binder in your cottage. Please review the binder and email us when you arrive to confirm your arrival.
Wi-Fi: There is not cell service in Port Renfrew, but all cottages are equipped with Wi-Fi. So you will have access to internet and emails. You will find the wifi login and password in the Welcome book binder in the cottage, and door code email.
INTERNET SERVICE IN PORT RENFREW: It is important to know that, in the summer months or very busy weekends, when many people are visiting Port Renfrew, streaming services like Netflix, Crave etc.. may be slow to watch due to the high demand on the available bandwidth of internet service that serves Port Renfrew.
NO CELL SERVICE IN PORT RENFREW This means you will not be able to make and receive phone calls, as there is no cell reception. You will be able to make phone calls if you go to your settings, and enable “Wifi calling” if your phone plan and phone provider support this feature, Remember you will only be able to make and receive phone calls as long as you are in proximity of wifi. Wifi is provided in all cottages, so you will be able to have access to your email and internet. UPDATE MAY 2023: If your cell phone provider is Rogers, Fido or Shaw you will have cell coverage.
NO GROCERY STORE IN PORT RENFREW: Port Renfrew only has a General Store, open daily (11AM to 7PM). Although it is a very well equipped little store, you will not find fresh meat, and only a small variety of fruit and vegis. You can expect a good variety of dry goods, coffee, spice, along with bread, milk, eggs, bacon and other sealed pre-packed meats and liquor, wine and beer. You may also visit the grocery stores in Sooke or Lake Cowichan, depending from which way you will be travelling.
CABLE TV: Cable tv is provided in the bedroom Tv. The living room tv, only offers DVD player and DVD movies.
SHEETS AND TOWELS: There will be 1 set of sheets for every bed including the sofa bed, and 4 towels as per maximum occupancy of the cottage. More towel can be available at additional cost ($5/each) or you may bring some form home if you judge you will need additional ones.
COFFEE MACHINE: The coffee machine is a regular 12 cup drip coffee maker and a coffee fresh press. Please bring you own coffee.
DISHES: All dishes in the cupboards are used and cleaned by guests. To be considerate of the guests following your visit, please ensure to clean your dishes properly.
PARKING:
- This cottages can accommodate parking for 2 car only. Extra vehicles can park in the visitor parking (space is limited, it is best to carpool.)
- Boat and trailer can be park at the marina for a small fee. Please call (250) 412-5509 for reservation.
- RV's and camping are not permitted at the cottage community.
WOOD BURNING OUTDOOR FIRE PIT: There is a wood burning fire pit for guest enjoyment, that can be use only when no fire bans are in effect. It is suggested to bring with your: paper, fire starter, kindling and wood. Some cottage owner may provide some firewood, if so, it is kept outside and may be damp. There is a couple locals that sell firewood by the bundles, or the Gas Station and General Store also sell some.
OUTDOOR ELECTRIC HEATER:There is an outdoor electric heater on the deck for guest enjoyment. There is a 30 min timer to get it started, but found that the timer is not always working. Please remember to turn off when not in use. Remote is in the cottage. Small white remote.
