Experience luxurious accommodation in a wild west coast setting with oceanfront views throughout
Going Coastal R&R is a brand new cottage situated on a clifftop above the crashing waves of Port San Juan inlet. It features unimpeded spectacular views of the ocean, forests and beaches beyond. Enjoy a glass of wine on the deck or patio and watch the sunset while eagles soar above and salmon jump below.
Our cottage is set up for maximum flexibility for small or large groups. It can accommodate up to 12 people, with two separate fully-contained upper and lower suites, and an extra side bedroom with its own entrance and half bath that can also be added on to any configuration. Attention has been taken to assure maximum noise suppression between the floors and to maximize visual privacy as well.
The three main bedrooms (one up and two down) are made up with king-sized beds with posturepedic memory foam mattresses. There are also a variety of pillows to choose from including hypoallergenic ones in gel, memory foam, contoured and traditional fill in various shapes and thicknesses. . . allowing for a sleep that may not even be achieved at home.
The upstairs unit also has an office/bedroom (with a computer desk) and built-in twin x-long bunk beds and a comfortable queen-sized sofa bed in the living room.
The west-coast-style water feature tumbles alongside Going Coastal and is bordered by a slate-and-cedar-step pathway that winds down to the dramatic ocean side cliff lookout. Here one can watch the water cascade down amongst the rocks to spill into the cove below where the otters often play and, at low tide, exposing the adjacent islets and the Botanical-like tidepools. When tide and wind conditions are right, the sound of the surf blasting into the shallow sea cave tucked underneath us vibrates into the ground itself.
Other notable features:
Propane fireplace upstairs
Cliff-side fire pit surrounded by a built-in cedar bench with wood and kindling supplied (howling at the moon optional)
Large deck off the upper level with propane BBQ, and a slate patio in front of the lower level
Wifi throughout
Flat screen TVs, and DVD players on both levels
A wide variety of games and books, including guide books to local attractions and history, and DVDs
A washer and dryer on the upper level
Three skylights on the upper level for enhanced natural lighting
The upstairs kitchen is complete with a dishwasher while both kitchens have refrigerators with sizable freezer compartments along with a gas stove/oven and microwave in each
Complimentary coffee, tea and basic condiments in each kitchen

Going Coastal was everything we had anticipated -- excellent accommodations, a lovely deck overlooking the bay and top notch service from the Handsome Dan's team. Our only slight complaint was the flimsy, fraying bathroom towels but really, that's such a tiny, tiny thing compared to how much we loved the cabin. The kitchen was stocked better than any place we've ever rented, and we've stayed at a lot of vacation rentals! Extremely impressive. I would highly recommend this cabin -- and Handsome Dan's -- to anyone.
Thank-you to Handsome Dan and France for your wonderful service!
We stayed in beautiful cabin #108 last weekend. We were two of many guests who were invited to a wedding in your beautiful town.
Cabin # 108 is absolutely gorgeous! We loved the view and the attention to every detail. The king sized bed and linens were really comfortable.
The cabin has a beautiful deck on which to relax and take the views in. The kitchen was complete with absolutely everything you will need. A cozy fireplace made for a relaxing time in between hikes, beach walks and beautiful sights.
We will definitely be back to enjoy this special place soon!
Which Cottage have you stayed?:Going Coastal 108 A
What a wonderful spot to relax and renew. "Going Coastal" -108 was a perfect vacation cottage, nothing was forgotten. The Eagles soaring by every morning, the sound of the waves below, the frogs singing T night- it was special. We hope to come back soon.
Beautiful accommodations in a beautiful place, this cottage was equipped with everything anyone could need. We had 5 people and everyone was comfortable, the beds were fantastic and the shower was great. All five of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan to return in the future. This was the most comfortable vacation I have had in years not to mention the west coast is worth the trip every time.

Must Know
As of June 01, 2020 and due to the health and safety concerns brought on by the corona event, please be aware of these changes we have made to our cottages:
SUNDRY ITEMS: All condiments and staples have been removed from the cottage. This means sundry items like coffee, tea, sugar, salt and pepper (and their shakers), cooking oils and other handy things that help round-off a nice meal have had to be removed. Be sure to include these kinds of items in your list of things to bring to the cottage. Most of these are available at the San Juan Market (in Port Renfrew), but we never know if the supply will keep up with the demand under the new rules. And please, take home with you all the condiments you brought;
LINENS: Of course, ALL bed linens, duvet covers, bath and hand towels, shower curtains and kitchen towels and dish rags are professionally laundered between each Guest’s visit. But we have had to remove all the extra blankets that each cottage had earlier provided. Please pack your own favourite blankets from home to increase the cozy factor during your stay at Handsome Dan’s;
DISHES Although the cottage remains fully equipped with all serving dishes and plates, glasses, cups, cooking pots and pans and utensils you will need to prepare a fine meal, REMEMBER that these items will all have been used, cleaned and stored away in their respective location by the previous Guest. With this mind, be sure to re-clean each re-useable piece of kitchen equipment before your personal use (there is plenty of dish soap and clean dish rags in the cottage)
GUEST INFORMATION BOOK: All the information for the cottage, including where things are, and how things work are in the welcome binder in your cottage. Please review the binder and email us when you arrive to confirm your arrival.
Wi-Fi: There is not cell service in Port Renfrew, but all cottages are equipped with Wi-Fi. So you will have access to internet and emails. You will find the wifi login and password in the Welcome book binder in the cottage.
INTERNET SERVICE IN PORT RENFREW: It is important to know that, in the summer months or very busy weekends, when many people are visiting Port Renfrew, streaming services like Netflix, Crave etc.. may be slow to watch due to the high demand on the available bandwidth of internet service that serves Port Renfrew.
NO CELL SERVICE IN PORT RENFREW This means you will not be able to make and receive phone calls, as there is no cell reception. You will be able to make phone calls if you go to your settings, and enable “Wifi calling” if your phone plan and phone provider support this feature, Remember you will only be able to make and receive phone calls as long as you are in proximity of wifi. Wifi is provided in all cottages, so you will be able to have access to your email and internet.
NO GROCERY STORE IN PORT RENFREW: Port Renfrew only has a General Store, open daily (11AM to 7PM). Although it is a very well equipped little store, you will not find fresh meat, and only a small variety of fruit and vegis. You can expect a good variety of dry goods, coffee, spice, along with bread, milk, eggs, bacon and other sealed pre-packed meats and liquor, wine and beer. You may also visit the grocery stores in Sooke or Lake Cowichan, depending from which way you will be travelling.
SHEETS AND TOWELS: There will be 1 set of sheets for every bed including the sofa bed, and 6 towels as per maximum occupancy of the cottage. More towel can be available at additional cost ($5/each) or you may bring some form home if you judge you will need additional ones.
COFFEE MACHINE: This cottage includes 2 type of coffee machine; A regular 12 cup drip coffee maker, and a stainless steel thermo french press bodum is also provided. Please bring you own coffee.
DISHES: All dishes in the cupboards are used and cleaned by guests. To be considerate of the guests following your visit, please ensure to clean your dishes properly.
PHONE This cottage is equipped with a land line. If you wish to have people calling you, the cottage phone number is: 778-402-5410
PARKING: Must park along the road, adjacent to the cottage. Limited parking available. Carpooling is suggested in high season.
- Boat and trailer can be park at the marina for a small fee. Please call (250) 412-5509 for reservation.
- RV's and camping are not permitted at the cottage community.
WOOD BURNING OUTDOOR FIRE PIT: There is a wood burning fire pit for guest enjoyment, that can be use only when no fire bans are in effect. It is suggested to bring with your: paper, fire starter, kindling and wood. Some cottage owner may provide some firewood, if so, it is kept outside and may be damp. There is a couple locals that sell firewood by the bundles, or the Gas Station and General Store also sell some.
OUTDOOR PROPANE FIRE PIT: This cottage is also equipped with a propane fire pit on lower terrace for guest enjoyment. A propane tank is supplied, but guest must purchase their own propane. Propane can be purchase at the gas station open daily Summer season: 6am-8pm Winter season: 8am-8pm
